이 이야기는 현재 우리나라에 거주하고 있는 외국인들이 한국이라는 이국의 땅에서 일상의 삶을 즐기는 방식에 대한 기록이고 인물을 대상으로 하는 나의 기존 사진적 접근 방식과 더불어 인물이 만들어 낼 수 있는 아름다운 풍경사진에 대한 충동으로 시작되었다. 그리고 인간의 자유의지와 집단 또는 개인 행동양식, 사회적 공간으로서의 자연, 자연에 대한 인간의 연약함, 감각적 기쁨, 내면의 미 등에 대한 것들을 시각적으로 표현해 보고자 하였다. 
● 집에서 차로 20분 정도의 거리에 산방산을 앞에 두고 하멜 기념관이 생겼다. 이 작업의 시작은 핸드릭 하멜(Hendrick Hamel, 한국식이름 : 함 일)이라는 인물에서 시작되었다. 그는 지금으로부터 약 350년 전 한국에서 아주 멀리 떨어진 네델란드라는 조그만 나라에서 큰 바다를 건너 우리 땅을 밟고 돌아간 서양사람 이다. 그는 한국에 13년간 체류하였던 외국인으로 한국을 서양에 소개했던 첫 인물이다. 
● 350년이 흐른 현재, 한국의 외국인들은 억류되어 생활했던 함 일 일행과는 사뭇 다른 모습으로 이국의 생활을 즐기고 있는 듯하다. 그들은 함일 일행과는 달리 자의에 의해 한국에 들어와 한국의 전통과 문화와 사람들을 만나며 자신들의 이국에서의 생활을 즐기고 있다. 그들은 어쩌면 자국 내에서의 답답한 일상을 탈출하여 이곳에서 또 다른 자신의 '배'를 만들어 또 다른 희망의 세계로의 탈출을 꿈꾸는지 모른다. 
● 친분이 있는 외국인이 배를 만들기 시작했다. 몇 년 간 배 만드는 책과 정보를 수집하더니 드디어 작년부터 합판과 에폭시를 사 나르고 이제 어느덧 배의 형태를 지닌 반쪽의 목선이 눈앞에 나타났다. 그의 꿈은 자신이 만든 배를 타고 세계를 일주하는 것이다, 장년의 꿈...... 나는 그가 꿈을 이루기를 바란다. 
● '배'를 구하여 자신의 이상을 실현하고자 하는 믿음과 의지, 나는 그들에게 함일이라는 이름을 붙여 그들의 일상과 그 이면의 것들을 기록해 보고자 한다. 표류되지 않은 그들의 꿈은 무엇이고 다이내믹 코리아가 그들을 붙잡고 있는 원더풀한 이유에 대해.

Pied a Terre Lumiere

At concentrated sources of extreme coldness,

surplus glut of stale household condensation

and fresh morning dew fall accumulate and centralise,

where they mix and gel,

freeze rock hard into ice nuggets,

frost over with fireproof snowflakes

and mature into

see-through glass, crystal, diamonds, silver and stainless steel. 

Their strength, energy and force sets off fuse ignition,

sending sparks flying,

flammably burning

 -but these stone power-packs themselves,

withstand all heat,

never even thaw out slightly, let alone melt away,

damage repellent immunity strain being resistant,
durable and indestructable. 

Borne aloft on the sudden gust of a gentle breeze,

a flock, pack, shoal or swarm of such units comes together,

forming ballroom dance-floor solid rivers,

often abruptly halted and stuck at unbroken standstill,

as well as ethereal gaseous liquid pavements and roads
that sometimes stir, flow and gush forwards. 

Moving along,

only at a dead-slow snail and tortoise pace,

both infantry processions parade ahead boldly,

glow sunshine and spread warmth,

preventatively cancelling out villainous power-cuts that would otherwise successfully plunge brightness and clarity of day

into invincibly dark night time sub-zero conditions.

Have also helped "christen" works, such as 'Ffolly' and 'Orifice Grid'.

Sometimes, Rut Blees Luxemburg exhibits and publishes black, white and grisaille trial-run polaroids from site-visits, plans for usually colour, high-resolute and large scale works, often including accomplice's inscriptions.

Jokes were made that ‘Pied-a-Terre Lumiere’ and 'Trinativity' were worthy candidature fodder as arias in the 2004 opera, 'Liebeslied / My Suicides' (Alexander Garcia-Duttmann's libretto using earlier texts for Rut Blees Luxemburg, set to music by Paul Clark).

Instead of reaction, action!

Since its birth as a pop-up space in April 2010, RED continues to thrive. During this time it has fast established itself as one of the East End’s most exciting cultural hubs, a collective of creative individuals and organisations bringing together art, music, film and related cultural events, and as an instigator of national and international collaborations. From our inception one of the guiding principles has been to work with, and seek input from the local artistic and creative communities, to build new business models and strengthen local, national and international ties in order to further our vision of an expansive artistic culture.

To celebrate all this, RED has decided to hold it’s first Radical Christmas Event, inviting all those who have had an impact on the direction, past, present and future of the project, to come together in an act of unity and celebration, and to look forward towards 2012.

Surreal Nightmares at Shunt

A weekend of Surreal Nightmares made flesh in performance, installation, photography and music. Shunt, Londons most unique and exciting arts venue and bar, plays host to the extreme, the macabre and the perverse for two nights only.

The concept is to turn The Machine (a three tiered performance space and relic of the industrial revolution) into a fabric of nightmare episodes; all generated by the unconscious mind of one deprave...d indivual (cast as the appalling Robert Spragg).

This figure sleeps on soiled sheets and tosses and turns in a polluted swimming pool dreamscape. He has been given these nightmares by the excessive consumption of tinned ‘all day breakfast’- referencing the seminal piece All Day Breakfast by Richard Crow (Performing a new piece in the Bank space).

Over the course of the weekend a number of 2D works,performances, films and installations will be shown over the Shunt space incorporating the fabric of the machine into the one immersive installation that is The Surreal Nightmare.
